Default Surging under hard acceleration at highway speeds

Howdy gang, I got a problem with my 2006 F150.

Under hard accelerating at highways speeds and or on hills, it will start to surge and buck.

Full tank of gas.
New fuel filter.
With OD on or off.
In 2nd or 3rd.

Jan 2012 I replaced FPCM.

I hooked up forscan, and it showed the following codes:
P0148 - fuel delivery error
P0171 - too lean bank 1
P0174 - too lean bank 2
P0191 - fuel range pressure too low/high

I ran the FORScan scope and it showed fuel pressure dropping to about 8PSI (yes *eight* PSI) when the surging starts to happen.

Based on the codes and the low pressure under hard acceleration, I am thinking it could be:
- fuel pump assembly
- intermittent problem with the intertia shut off
- my two year old fuel pump delivery module is kapuut
- kink in the line

I will be inspecting the lines, but is there any way to individually test the other components? I think the fuel pump assembly is about $600 up here in the GWN and sounds like a bitch to replace.

I had the same problem on my 2006 5.4 King Ranch. I changed plugs and cops and it went away. Good luck to you

I had a plug and COP issue a year or so ago. It was not a surging at high speed, but a misfire under load. One COP replaced and all plugs replaced.

Also, I doubt you got these codes with a plugs and COP issue.

P0148 - fuel delivery error
P0191 - fuel range pressure too low/high

Either FPDM (above the spare tire) or the fuel pump itself. Have you changed the fuel filter SINCE the surging started?

Thanks for asking - yes, the first thing I replaced when the surging started was the fuel filter.

So why are you thinking FPDM versus fuel pump?

im not TechRep but I am assuming that he is guessing this as it is much more likely to fail than the pump itself.

do you live in an area that they put down the liquid ice melt stuff down during the winter? they just started that in the town I live in instead of the regular salt/gravel mixture, and I have noticed that it seems to be much harsher on parts, especially electrical components under the vehicle...ie the FPDM.

Interesting. I replaced the FPDM 2 years ago. We have very mild winters on the west coast (mostly rain). Very little salt or anything else is put on the roads.

A read a lot of postings about the "bad ford fuel pump".

So I am a little confused about one over the other. Is it just a guess, or is there some other info I am missing?

The replacement FPDM's have not been Mr. Reliable...depending on which one you replaced your OEM one with ...I would try another before tearing into a fuel pump...up to you though.. I can tell you is I do not see very many bad fuel pumps in 04-08. good luck and let us know what it was...
