I have a 2004 F150, 5.4. Owned it about 6 months and have loved the truck. However just has to have it towed, took it to Aamco and they said the Sprag in the transmission is bad. Apparently Ford decided to make them plastic that year.

So they have to take the Transmission out and replace and are going to inspect it and make sure there is no more damage.

My question(s): Is this a common problem? They are charging me about $1,500-2k is that fair? Are there any other problems that come with this or that I should watch for?

Some more details on the issue would help. And $1500-2000 is alot to just replace 1 part. Thats the cost of a complete rebuild.

 

That is what I thought, to me it sounded like for that price I could have it completely re-built.

I am not sure what more details I can give you. Everything I read about the Sprag seemed to align with the problem. So I am sure the sprag needs to go.
