Default Simple mods for mileage and towing

Got a '07, with the 5.4. 75,000 miles, all is good.

Curious on what would be simple mods to get better gas mileage and tow better.

Intakes, air filters, plugs, coils, etc.

What has worked that is inexpensive and easy to install?

Keep the tires (both truck and trailer) at proper inflation. While this may appear to be a simple issue, I've noticed many under inflated tires on both the trailer and the towing vehicle at many campsites.

And try to keep the weight down to a minimum. If you don't use it, don't take it with you when you haul.

Lot's of people have reported success with the Edge tuner. But, like Bucko said, the basics will always bite you in the wallet first. Proper tire inflation, properly maintained engine (plugs, clean filters, etc.).

This, maintenance trumps all.

Along with the above mentioned items an Edge tuner... very simple and yield is the best.

These are probably the most important factors. Keep up on the maintenance, and keep your foot out of it. I put a tuner on my 2000 Mustang GT. Never really saw any better mpg, even though many others reported that they did. The giggle factor of the extra power it gave the car was just too much fun. I couldn't keep my foot out of it enough to see any gains in mpg. At least they didn't go down though.

Truth. The easiest, simplest, quickest, cheapest mods you can do are to keep it maintained and to not press it to the floor at take-off.

$280 Gator tonneau cover installed in 5 minutes and gave my '04 SupCab 2wd about 2mpg improvement cruising the highway. I have a '06 5.5' bed lariat now, SuperCrew 4WD and I get about 17.5 highway... just installed tonneau cover so I'll see if the trend continues. I'm only hoping for a 1-1.5 mph improvement due to the short bed, extra cab weight and 4WD but as much as I drive it will pay for itself (well, considering I found this one at 1/4 price on CL it will pay for itself even faster...)

Also the folding ones weigh way less than the hard ones and they secure your bed, while being easily taken off in 5 minutes to haul appliances or larger loads and stored in a fraction of the space. I'd not store the Queen's gold in the bed with a soft cover, but for tools and groceries I've never had a problem.
