I vote for 5.4 mine has the phazer noise since the start and it is going strong noise has not gotten worse and I dont baby my truck. The 5.4 is reliable and the issues are know and easily preventable IMO. Power is definately better than 4.6. Mileage I dont care really its a truck

According to fueleconomy.gov the 4.6 and 5.4 get the exact same mileage. If you are worried about mileage it makes no sense to not go with the 5.4

but that's the 4x4's here are all 4 next to each other. 2 mpg is not worth the serious lack of power

5.4= 300hp,decent mpg, a little noisy, very reliable, and lots of aftermarket add-ons to make it go faster. Seems like you have your answer!

I have an 06 4x4 with the 4.6, and have never felt at a loss for power. I test drove a 5.4 before I bought my truck, and mine felt a lot lighter and quicker/more responsive. I pulled a trailer (5-7k lbs) along with a loaded bed 5 days a week for almost the entire life of the truck, never once had a problem. Few times had a pallet of mulch/sod in the bed (over 2k) along with tools and guys, while pulling the 7k trailer. I agree that either way maintenance is key - I do all recommended maintenance before its due. I say test drive a few and get the one that feels best to you. One way or the other, you will be getting a solid truck that should serve you well for years to come. Good luck

Try and get the FX4 package. With the limited slip diff and the 5.4 you have plenty of power and towing would be no problem. its what I have and I love the hell out of it. as for gas, well its like my buddies dad says "you gotta pay to play" so its a necessary evil

Haha me to mine gets up and goes like no other and I no what you mean on the gas lol. But yea I recommend the fx4 to. Only problem is the cam phaser noise issue but doesnt really matter. Since I have the extra power.

I have a 07 4.6 you'd be surprised to what they can do. And honestly it's not that big of difference. You'll end up coming about the same once you put upgrades on the 4.6.

I have an 08' with the 4.6 and it runs great! Very happy with my decision and has good pull off the line.
