Default Shifting hard?

So on my way home from work today I got behind this slow car, and like anyone else would do I proceeded to pass them. I was watching my rpm gauge and noticed it got to around 5500 and it sputtered and then shifted hard. So at the next stop sign I floored it just to see if it did it again, and it did. Any suggestions on what's up with this? It's a 2005 fx4 with 5.4L

normally when u have a misfire your check engine light will start flashing and as you are stepping on the gas pedal your truck will shutter a little bit, at least thats what mine did
