Default Rust...What to do??

Hey guys, so I recently bought an 07 and it has some rust on one of the rear fenders. The previous owner attempted to paint and clear coat it or something, but it looks awful. How can I make it look better?

My two thoughts are to either sand and grind the rust away and try to paint just the small area but I doubt I will get results I want. The other option is to get OEM fender flares to stick on there after taking care of the rust.

I really dont want to pay to have the whole bedside repainted. Anyone know how much that would run me if I did?

Opinions please!

I was quoted $500 by a local Pearson's to fix a small amount of rust below my gas cap. They went on to tell me that they remove all the trim and decals and what not and repaint the entire panel. I'd rather just touch it up myself.

First you need to treat it (stop the corrosion) sand it down and apply some inhibitor ..loc tight makes some rust inhibitor...then you can deal with the prime/paint/clear coat.

Thanks for the input. Definitely going to use an inhibitor. Does anyone have pictures of rust spots repaired with spray paint? Does it reasonably blend? I figure I will try to fix it myself and if it does not come out right I will just buy some OEM flares.

The rust you have can luckily be hidden by the oem fender flares.. The factory flares look great on these trucks but they will require you to drill some holes for install.. You can get away with sticky tape if your uncomfortable drilling..

But before you toss on any cover up, you need to sand that rust down to bare metal and treat the surface with POR 15 or any other rust inhibiting primer.. That rust needs to be dealt with ASAP before it spreads to a point where a fender flare won't cover it...

This is a factory fender flare.
