THink the issue is with the #7 check ball in the trans valve body. Gonna drop the body and replace them, see what happens.

Those darn check *****!
Just a thought but, I'd clean and check the movement and spring compression on all te valves in the valve body while ur there. I'd also replace the gasket as well.
Side note, could it be the 1-2 accumulator? I replaced mine due to delayed engagement.
just trying to give you some things to think about and check while you got it apart.

Ford in all of their infinite wisdom decided to make them out of rubber. The replacements I'm getting are plastic. Yeah, I have a few things I'm looking at while I'm in there

Ok folks, repair is done. Went pretty well, all things considered. The electrical "leaf" that runs across the body was a PITA to remove. Broke one of the locking tabs (age and brittleness due to eat cycles), but it reseated perfectly. Six of the seven check ***** were where they were supposed to be, number seven was just kind of hanging out. Could definitely see wear as they were smaller in diameter when compared to the replacements. Cleaned and replaced. Also inspected the OD retaining clip and found no signs of damage. Reassembly went decently. Difficult by yourself and on the grass. Be sure to use proper torque and sequence. Truck no longer dies in second and shifting feels a touch smoother

Side note. I did in fact order that hard wire internal electrical leaf. So I'll be going back in. My conscious won't let me rest knowing it's not 100% in good shape
