Default Royal purple enigine oil users read this!!

I bought a 2004 FX4 F150 5.4 brand new in Jan of 2005. The first year I ran 5w-20 motorcraft synblend oil with motorcraft oil filter. Then I switched to Mobil 1 5w-20 oil still using motorcfaft filters untill June of this year 2012 I had 78,000 miles on it. I got the bright idea of trying Royal Purple 5w-20 since I have always heard its supposed to be the best of the best...well In early Sept I decided to drain a little out into a clean pan just to see how it looked and the oil was loaded with metal shavings!! This was at 80,400 miles!! To make a long story short I did put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on it at the passenger side head which read 20psi idle 60 psi cruisin and eventually found out the camshafts were eating the cam caps on the heads...would it have done this if I stayed with Mobil 1 or Motorcraft oil?? I guess we'll never know but since I put a reman engine in my truck, it or anything else I own will NEVER see Royal Purple again. Also, I realize I spelled "engine" in the title "enigine"...I couldnt edit it after I posted.

There is absolutely no connection to your problem and Royal Purple, except for the fact that you were running RP when you found the problem. I'll continue to run RP 5w-30, thank you.

I'll say it one more time. Royal Purple is a top quality oil, and has no connection to your mishap.

I think both Mobil 1 and Royal Purple are fantastic synthetic oils. I think the problem you had was attributed to something else.

I'm not a believer of your claims.

I've had great results with royal purple in a few different motors.

I'm interested in how the OP read oil pressure on the passenger side head. I want to do this myself but can only think of hookjng a gauge up to the sending unit by the oil filter.

Regarding oil, I suspect 2000 miles of RP didn't trash your engine. Perhaps it loosened sludge that was masking a problem? Hard to tell.

I agree, RP is one of the best oils out there . I think that it was pure chance you had switched to RP when you found the problem . Your putting the blame in the wrong spot .

All you guys have valid points and Im not arguing with anyone. Maybe the engine was on the brink and I found it at my last oil change..my post was for informational purposes only. Any engine built these days should last more than 80,000 miles. For me though I cant go back to RP atleast engine oil anyways cause I do admit I still have it in my Axles. As far as the passenger side oil pressure gauge hook up, it is at the back side of the passenger head against the firewall. 1/4" pipe thread and Ive read its the best place to see what actual pressure you have at your cam phasers/VCT selenoids. Tapping into the oil at the oil filter housing where the factory sending unit will give you the highest pressure reading and at the head it should be slightly lower. I didnt mean to offend anyone!!
