Yup, last Monday afternoon when I changed the oil. It seemed to help, but then again everything seems to help for a while, and it goes back to sounding like a diesel. Not the light sound that these engines typically have, but full blown Cummings diesel sound, which makes many a person ask, "How exactly did you get the Cummings (or Powerstroke, Duramax) in an F150?".

Alright, I will have to wait until dear old Uncle Sam repays the money he owes me, before I can get the exhaust replaced under the truck. So until such time I will not be doing anything with the engine.

In the interim, a friend of mine bought himself an OBD-II tester, and since I have all kinds of dummy lights on, he hooked it to my truck to read the codes. The codes are P0012, P0340, and P0345. They are on showing on Bank 1 and 2. He cleared the codes, and I have yet to go anywhere.

The joy of it all. Will update when I go to town, or to work, which ever comes first.

There's a link for this in the "stop, before you post faq"

Do you have any unusual noises, ticks, taps or rattles.....maybe worth doing a compression test to see if all the valves are working okay or if you have a cylinder issue?

Lifters could need changing and inspect your rockers whilst you are there.....

Throttle body cleaning as you have done usually cures the rough idle!

I am going to change the exhaust, and when they do I am going to have oil and fuel pressures checked in the truck. Depending on how much tax return money I have I will ask if they can do a compression test. Also going to short change the oil, and have that tested as well, make sure there are no fine engine metal particles in it.

Try running some chevron fuel injector cleaner, cleaning maf, cleaning throttle body, change fuel filter. Just a few fast ideas that won't hurt even I they aren't the problem..

I'm having the same issue as yours. This weekend I am going to flip my VCT solenoids to see if I can replicate the issue on the opposite bank(mine has a p0022). I also have a p0430 thats a CAT problem so I also am starting to think I have a CAT issue causing mine to stall and idle extremely rough once at operating temp. Did you get any CAT codes?

Default Rough idle in reverse

I have been through the wringer with this problem for 6 months. The 5.4 3v motor was replaced with a rebuilt at 105k. At 125k it started to stall at idle. Had VCT solenoids, oil pump, fuel filter, MAF sensor, throttle position sensor, and vacuum solenoids replaced without any improvement. Finally took it to the dealer and they found that the installer routed part of the engine harness wrong and it was causing a IMRC solenoid to not be able to operate. That fixed the stalling when hot problem but not the rough idle in reverse. As Farmer John indicated, if I put it in neutral and rev it up it idles again until you put it in reverse. It then sounds like a diesel and throws a P0022 Timing is retarded Bank 2 code.

I'm replacing the cam position sensors next but fear its another cam phaser problem. That was what killed the first motor. The right phaser stuck, destroyed the cam follower and wiped the cam ($5800). Now after putting $3500 more into chasing this problem I'm through with Ford. The VCT system is hellishly complex and when it goes South even the dealers just scratch their heads and shrug.

If anyone solved this problem I would love to hear how.

In response to the p0022 code, I had the p0012 code for the other side, I pulled both my vct solenoids, sprayed them with throttle body cleaner, dipped them in oil and reinstalled into the opposite banks to see if the issue would follow. Cleared the code with my scanner and haven't had the code come back in 2500 miles or so. Running great. Give that a shot to see if the code follows to the other bank and shows p0012, if it does, then the solenoid is bad.
Good luck
Tom

I know this is old, but curious what was the final outcome?
