Default Rear View Mirror Swap

Does anyone know if it's possible to swap a regular (manual) rear view mirror with an auto-dimming mirror? What's involved?

I don't know if the Lariat or higher models have auto dimming rearview mirrors but you should be able to do this with a universal auto dimming mirror. I have seen it done many times on other vehicles.

I'd prefer going back with an OEM mirror. I have wiring going to the compass module on the mirror. Is this the same wiring that would power a mirror?

Should be, otherwise you can find a wiring source from the map lights. Don't you have a compass on your dash already?

The compass is in the instrument cluster. Maybe the square black box under the rear view mirror is for something else.

Yep, first mod I did. Just need power wire, ground wire, and if you want an input from the reverse (found drivers side wire loom, this is used to override dimming when backing up)) run these three wires up you pillar and over to the mirror. The box under the mirror is for the compass reading ( tells the gauge cluster display what way your facing). Found one from used 07 f150 on eBay for $35.00 shipped.

The wires going to the compass are separate from the three wires going to the mirror. Make sure if you order one you get the pigtail with it.... Pm if you need pics or help with wiring and I'll take some pics for you.

Good work! I think I might have to find a Lariat donor truck sometime!
