Question Rear End Noise; Help!

I have an '07 with limited slip and 3:73's.

Here's whats happening:

When i make a slow lazy turn there is a noise coming from the rear end. I can sometimes "feel" the noise in the floorboard. That happens most of the time when i am turning, but when i roll the window down on my truck and go over a speed-bump, the noise is evident as well.

This sound is similar to a slight banging or knocking. I have checked everything externally, fuel tank, springs, drive shaft etc.

When i shake the bed of the truck fairly hard, the noise sounds as if its coming from the passenger side rear wheel. My brother and I have checked both tires and brake components but everything was ship-shape. My guess is the rear outer bearing but before I begin to replace this I am hoping for suggestions.

I hope someone can me help.

Thanks

I have the same issue and I think I narrowed it down to axel wrap and the leaf springs twisting causing a thump. But again that is my truck, your issue may be different.

Haven't had time to take truck to the dealer but did find out some info.

I took the wheel, brake caliper and rotor off the rear passenger tire to measure the amount of movement coming from the axle.

The in and out movement is .17"
The up and down/left to right movement is .09"

Does anyone know what he ford factory specs are for the allowed movement?

I have the same "clunk" type noise eminating form the rear end of my 2002 F-150 Supercrew FX4 XLT, 70,000 miles. I have noticed it is worse in the summer months when it is hotter - Houston, TX. I also notice it is prevalent when turning into or backing our of a driveway where the slope from the driveway to the street steepens and the turn causes the axle to flex to the side of the lower rear wheel. Two summers ago the passenger side rear wheel developed a axle seal leak. I had the seal replaced and it seems like the noise became worse after that. Last summer I changed all fluids in the front and rear differential and transfer case and replaced with Mobil 1 synthetics making sure sure to add the correct amount of the limited slip gear oil additive. For a while the noise seemd to subside and over the winter months was non-existent. However it is back with a vengeance this summer and I expect it has something to do with the internal components of the rear differential. Sorry, but I have no solution. The local garage was no help as they say they cannot hear the noise. They would have to be deaf and dumb to not hear it.

Hi Guys,
Its been a really long time since i've been on here and I still have the same problem despite local shops suggesting solutions and performing them.

I changed the rear seals, had the C-Clips inspected along with the rest of differential, had the the leaf springs taken off and put back on in the case there was any torque or movement and most recently had the brake rotors checked. Everyone says there is nothing wrong and similar to what SJA said, "you have to be deaf not hear it".

I now have a vibration at highway speeds between 55mph and 65mph which is even more prevalent when slowing to those speeds.

Do you think there is any possible correlation between the 2?

The noise is more irritating than anything but it makes me overly cautious when 4x4ing. Don't want anything to snap when in the middle of the desert. Almost to the point of finding a junkyard rear end.

P.S. SJA, i first noticed the notice when pulling into the driveway where there was a slight curb that created twisting. Have you found the culprit yet?

Thanks all.
