Rear Differential Humming

OK guys its the outer pinion bearing that is making the racket. Mine is doing the same thing. Me and a buddy of mine are gonna pull the rear end in a few weeks and rebuilt it and replace the axle bearings and seals while we're at it. its really not the parts that cost so much, its the labor. We tackled a rear end service and pinion seal replacement on a E350 today and it was a booger. are ya'll getting vibrations or rear end shake at around 50 mph +?

Your quote sounds kinda on the high side to me. I was quoted $795 to have all the bearings replaced and as well as upgrading to 4.10s. Parts included.

I doubt its the rack and pinion. It would be howling and leaking.
It is leaking too, which doesn't make sense since I put a new seal on it right around 60,000 miles (not sure which seal).

Mine is doing that as well. Do you have any idea what it is? I just noticed I have a a leaky axle seal on the drivers side so that is on the list to be replaced.

I guess the noise could be described as a howling, especially now since it has gotten much worse in the past month or so... It's not really high pitched though and I was told if it were the Rack and Pinion it would be a high pitched noise...

I got her back and it was the pinion bearing, they rebuilt the whole differential for $550.
My advice for anyone getting this done is to go to a mechanic that specializes in axles and bearings, they did it for less than half of the non-dealer price, I'd imagine a dealer woulda quoted me around $1,500 here in Columbus, OH too... Good luck guys and gals

Yup, mine went a year ago and cost a grand at the dealer to fix. Seems to be a common problem in the F150's, from what I have been reading.
Also, something to think about. The F150 rear has a "crush ring" in it's assy of the pinion gear. This crush ring can become distorted over time, causing the backlash to be off, trashing the bearings and the ring and pinion backlash, causing more problems. There is a kit available (don't have the link right now) that eliminates the crush ring with solid rings. This will eliminate a weak link in the OEM design by staying put over the long haul and standing up to more abuse than the OEM crush ring.
If mine goes again, it's getting the eliminator kit and a posi spool.
