I have an 04 FX4 that makes this rattle on start up. I put 10w40 in it now with Lucas and the sound has all but left completely. Here in the last week it has become more prominent but I'm almost at the 4k mark since the last oil change. Point is my mechanic claims that it's the oil pump and bearings. Any thoughts? Also oil pressure has not been an issue running this thicker oil.

all lucas does is thicken your oil. if you started out with 5/20 your probably at close to a 40 with one qt of lucas. yeah thats right! oil analysis has proved this.

just step up to a 5/30 guys, its the same thing as adding lucas and instead of having one qt of wasted space (and diluting your oils additive package) in your sump you will have all motor oil. Marvel Mystery Oil is a good idea too because if you have any varnish in your lash limiters and tensioner it will take care of it but you dont want to add it to 5/20 because it thins the oil some. you would want to start with a 5/30 and it will be a 20. if there is any varnish in there it will be gone in 3k, no need to run it longer or all the time, unless you have sludge issues

just so you know incase someone says its not safe, i have been running 5/30 in mine for about 15k now and no ill effects and rag the crap out of it!!. its awesome to not have a bunch of pans rattling around under the hood in the morning!

ford sends the exact same engines to Europe as it uses here and NONE of them say to use 5/20. its just some bs CAFE requirement for MPGs. Dont buy the 5/20 crap, right now im using Maxlife 5/30 and its almost a 40w( one of the thickest 30w you can get!) with no issues

wow! you oil is thicker than 20/50 now.

maybe you should step down some to like a 10/30 and try some cleaner. it may be varnish in your valvetrain. MMO is only $4 and cant hurt a thing so you got nothin to loose

I see where running this heavy oil would be a concern to most but everything has gotten better until just now. I was mainly doing this as a test to see if it would make the rattle go away on start up. On a side note it made a major improvement to the cam phasers in that I only really hear them after running for 2 or 3 hours straight now.

I think it would also depend on ambient temperate also I have noticed mine has been worse this summer but it has also been over 105 here everyday most days have been around 110-114 degrees so my motor is at damn near operating temp already lol. I might try 5/30 next time

Getting ready to change the oil here shortly. Maxlife and lucas might do the trick if the oil pump doesn't blow first.

Just got done and it sounds much better now. Initial start up after refilling with oil produced a very disturbing sound for about 2 seconds, but all in all much better than before. 6 quarts Maxlife and 1 quart of Lucas.

glad to hear it. unlike some, atleast your not scared to try a thicker oil

mine rattles because it needs work but im not spending 2000 on an engine with 144k on it! so i just run thicker oil and when it finally starts smoking or something i will rebuild it right

I'm with you. Drive it till it blows then repair/replace from there.
