Default Rack and Pinion Replacement

Anyone had to have a full rack and pinion replacement in thier f150? I'm loosing fluid in the left boot and was given a qoute of $630 for the repair. I was told by a buddy at Ford they may have a seal repair kit available. Has anyone run accross this problem? He thinks it would run around $200 for the replacement of the seal. I have also been told by several mechanics the seals may not always hold. The $630 includes the alignemnt on the truck, the parts and labor. The rack and pinion priced at the parts store is $270 alone. Any advice?

is that $200 out the door? or just to replace the seal plus labor? depending on how much used parts are by you, could always get a low mileage used unit too. if it was my truck, i would do brand new, steering is not something i would skimp on.

$200 is for the seal and install together. I'm going to let the shop do the full rack and pinion install tomorrow and see how things go.
