Default Question for a buddy

This is an HVAC/Electrical related question. Buddy of mine has an 08 KR, climate controlled. Noticed the other day that the temperature on his cluster hit 0 and the A/C stopped blowing cold air and started running warm. We verified that the compressor, etc. are functioning properly and it blowing out warm arm seems correct, as according to the truck, it was 0 degrees outside. My question is this, what would cause the trucks temperature gauge to not register properly and revert back to zero? Would this cause the trucks climate control to become "confused" and blow out warm air, when it should be cold?

I should also note that the cluster hit 0 degrees in his driveway as well and the truck idled up to 1000, as if it was freezing cold outside and it was trying to warm up.
