Default Proper Weight Oil?

My brother just gave me 3 of those Gallon containers of Mobil 1 and it is 5-30W rated. My truck (2006 w/ 5.4 engine) owner's guide specifies 5-20W.

Can I use the 5-30W without causing any problems?

(note: I live in the Seattle area - our winters are really mild)

The 5w-30 will work fine. Ford states the 5w-20 for fuel mileage; the slightly thinner oil is supposed to provide just that much more MPG. Nothing you will notice.

i personally wouldnt run any weight oil besides what the factory recommends, especially with these motors cam phasers being so oil pressure sensitive.

It won't hurt it running the 30 weight. Ask your local Ford dealer. They even sell the higher weights (at least my local Ford dealer does),

I've used Mobil 1 5W-20, but recently changed to 0W-20. It is approved by Ford for vehicles that require 5W-20. Switched to see if I can eek out a few more .01 in gas mileage.

I thought the first number had to do with the oil at cold temp? As in engine has just been turned on.

The colder it is, the thinner the oil. It is 5 weight when it is cold, and that allows the vehicle to start easier.
