Default Programmers: canned vs custom

Good day, all

I have been researching programmers for my truck. I have an 06 F-150 SuperCab with the 5.4L flex fuel engine and 3.55 Limited Slip rearend. The truck has 66K miles and is completely stock except for the 285/70/17 BFG All-Terrain tires. The truck is my daily driver. I do take it on 2-3 long (700+ mile) trips each year. Each deer season the truck sees some mud and I occasionally tow my boat or a couple of 4 wheelers. (approx 3000lbs).

Up until the tire change my mileage was 14-15mpg city and 17-18 highway. Since the tire upgrade my mileage has nose dived to 12mpg combined.

I am looking at the EDGE Evolution and the SCT programmers. If I understand correctly, I can run on the canned tunes that come on these 2 programmers and would not need custom tunes (such as the Gryphon from PHP for the Edge or VMP for the SCT) unless I upgrade to a cold air intake and custom exhaust.

Am I on the right track, and if so what brand of programmer does everyone reccomend. I like the dashtop display of the EDGE Evolution, especially since it can display tranny temp. (My other truck is a 93 Bronco with an E4OD tranny with overheating problems).

Thanks for your help,
Steve

Gryphon hands down.

Canned tunes are meant to cover all of the PCM calibration tables for an entire year or years (each year has multiple calibration tables).

I'v got the Gryphon in my 2006 Lariat and I love it..but..dont expect your mileage to jump up.Especilly this time of year when stations are using a winter blend of fuel.At least here...I'm on Ohio.Keep in mind the the Gryphon IS and edge but has been unlocked by PHP to accept custom tunes. You dont have to get a custom tune when you get it..the custom tunes are 30 bucks a piece..although PHP runs sales and you can get 1 tune for free instead of the 30.00 discount.Anyway..if you cant afford a custom tune OR just dont think you need it thats fine.BUT,for the same price as an EDGE you can get a GRYPHON which comes with the SAME canned tunes as the edge. But like I said its unlocked. So if in the future you decide on a custom tune all you have to do is e-mail PHP and they will create a custom tune...E-mail it to you..and all you do then is hook the gryphon to your computer and presto you have a custom tune.I replace the canned trannsmission tune with a 89 octane performance tune.so now I have the canned 92 octane performance tune..the towing tune ..and the custom 89 octane tune.total spent..300 bucks.. which is the same as a new edge.Tell you one thing..my truck gets up an goes..the kid down the street went for a ride with me and now wants a tuner for his mustang after my TRUCK out performed his pony.

sidebar, Steve, Put a large auxilliary xmsn cooler (mounts in front of the radiator) on your Bronco and the E4OD will not run hot again. I got one that was about a square foot of finned area for my '92 and never had a problem again, even when pulling a 10K trailor halfway accross the country.

x2 on what posttal said about MPG. Right now mine is around 11-13 but that's due to the cold weather and gas that's out there.

To answer your question: Edge hands down if you want stock tunes which you would be fine running. You can correct your tire size before programing. If you want a little more torq later you can get your Edge upgraded to a Gryphon with custom tunes but of course that would cost you more in the long run.

If you want to save money and you plan on doing other things to your truck just grab the Gryphon directly from PHP.
