Problems with torque converter

Default Problems with torque converter

I am trying to replace a torque converter on a 2004 f150 lariat 4x4. Bought a F60ls from autozone. When putting it on the transmission, it feels tight, and does not clunk into place when turning and wiggling it. Took it off (not easily), and tried the old one which gave the distint clunks and came back off without trouble. Did get the wrong converter or is it bad. When i called Ford the replacement by vin is 8L3Z7902. Any help appreciated.

The shaft may be out of spec on your new TC. Measure the diameter and flats with a caliper and see how far off it is from the original. If it's off, take it back to AutoZone and exchange it. Take the calipers with you so can measure the new one in the store to make sure it's correct before you leave.

Looking at the AutoZone website, the TC reman F60LS is a low stall torque converter. The same part number when looking at it for a 2008, says it has a 1700 stall speed. Way too low. If your 2004 F150 4x4 has the 5.4L engine, the manual calls for a torque converter with a 2,404 min - 2,842 max stall speed. I'd return it and get a Ford one.

Go to parts.ford.com website and register. This is the official Ford website for parts. Add your truck and vin number, then search for the torque converter. They'll ask you to pick a dealer. Try all the dealers in your area to see which one gives discounted online pricing. There's usually one. My local dealer shows your TC has an MSRP of $218.13, but sells it for $163.60 A dealer in your area may be near that price. You could then call up the dealer and ask them if they have one in stock and if they'll honor their ford parts online price. They usually do. If not, order it through the website and have it shipped to your door for free, or Next Day Air for $9.99. Then return the core to the dealer you used as your purchasing dealer and get your $70 core charge back.

Got the refund from Autozone, went and purchased from FORD. Better warranty 2years unlimited.

Went back and returned Autozone torque converter, Purchased the one at Ford, came with a much better warranty. Two years unlimited.
