Default Problem replacing fuel filter

So I was going to change my fuel filter today because I don't know if it has ever been changed on my truck before I owned it. I bought the Motorcraft FG-986B fuel filter and a fuel line disconnect tool. I was able to get the old filter off, but I noticed that the new fuel filter lines are smaller than the old ones so they don't fit in the lines. I just want to verify if I have the wrong part or not... Thanks.

Don't know if Ford made a fuel filter change mid year, but every time I purchase a new one from Advance Auto, they always want to give me one that is the wrong size. I now take the old one with me to verify I get the right fitting sizes on the new one.

Changed mine last year and the parts guy wanted my build date, which I thought was weird but he said some late 06's will have a different filter

I have one of the first 06 made and I have to ask for an 05 fuel filter or they give me the wrong one. Also have to get 05 brake pads. Ford must of used up all the 05 stuff on the early 06 and then made changes a few months into the model year.
