Default Power steering pump

Guy,s the time has come for me to replace my power steering pump. Any recomendations on the one to replace it with. Also where is the best place to purchase one at, Auto Zone, Pep Boys or from the Dealer. 2004 FX 4 171,000 miles.

I had to replace mine on a sunday, so I went to Napa. It seems like they have better quality than Autozone or Advanced, but that could just be my perception.

This may be a dumb question but it's never happened to me, how do you know when your power steering pump is on its way out ?

For me, it was when the threads in the shaft were so rusted that they stripped out. I couldn't get the pulley back on, so I replaced it. For most other people, it can make a whining noise. The seals can blow out causing leaks and/or malfunction (it won't build pressure). Most of them can be rebuilt, but in my opinion, they're cheap enough to just buy a new one and not worry about additional issues with a rebuilt one.

On our 07 Expedition, the engine made a whirring sound as it ran. It was a really loud annoying whirring!

sounds like a bad torque converter. but only when you hit the gas and when you turn the wheel to the lock it would make the front tires skip/hop
