post your mpg
I don't think they are perfect either. I know the DSG transmission had had some programming hiccups resulting in "clunking", but I don't think that issue is still present with the latest update... Its still an excellent transmission, with a great design. Its 2 coupled manual gear boxes with 2 clutches, no torque converter and no issues with heat.. Just like any other manual, it will require new clutches at some point, but it appears to be a pretty easy service.. But I still prefer a stick when it comes to cars. Tip-tronic shifting just doesn't replace a stick for me, although it is nice...
I'm looking for the 6 speed manual 4 door golf loaded, which has proved to be an elusive hunt.. I might have to bite the bullet and buy new, considering the ones I've seen on the used market are still commanding 18k+ for 2010 - 2012. For 4k more I can walk with a new 2013. We're gonna keep the car forever, so buying new wouldn't be the worst idea either... If we do sell it, it would only be for the latest diesel motor or maybe the GTD if it comes to the states.
We're not exactly in a huge rush to buy either, because the soon to be released 2014 golf has got some nice features. Its about 200lbs lighter, the 2.0 TDI has a little more power, and its got a more aggressive look. So we might hold out for one of those if we don't get what I would call a good deal now. A good "realistic" deal to ME is about 20k for a 2013 new, or 14k used. Especially considering the upcoming design change.
I have no intention of trading for the next 5-6 years. If I had the money, I'd have 2 new cars; 2013 Mustang Shelby GT 500 and a 2013 VW Golf R tuned to APR Stage III.
I got 24 mpg as displayed by the trucks computer today running at 46mph with bulk cargo and rolling hills, so it is possible. You just need to run in fourth gear in the lowest rpm's which is usually 35-45 mph, anything above 1050/1100 rpm and you will loose mpg rapidly.

Let's see. My wife driving around in Tuscaloosa; 7 mpg. Worst I've ever seen in 5 years of owning my truck!
Me on a typical 400 mile trip (not interstate), the best I've seen is 21 mpg once, staying below 60 mph. Normal around town with me is about 14 mpg, and highway (again, below 65 mph) around 17-18.
4.6 SCAB with 6 1/2' bed, 4x4, 3.55 ratio, 265/70-17 AT tires, gotts mod & canned 87 tow tune on Gryphon. Tool box in bed has about 150 lbs of stuff in it.
I could get better if I rolled a couple hundred miles in a row down hill ...maybe.
I actually think the mileage I get in this truck is darn good compared to my previous trucks. '70 Chevy K-20 350/350 4x4 (11-12 mpg), '92 F-150 4.9/E4OD 4x4 (14 mpg).
