Default Possible Gauge malfunction

I just ran into - wrong choice to words -- I just noticed a problem that may resolve itself. My fuel gauge was showing low, and probably was correct. I went and filled the tank and it took 19.57 gallons to fill it, I did observe fuel at the top of the filler tube. On the way home I noticed the fuel gauge only went as high as about 1/4 tank full.

The ride home may be one half mile. If it does not shape up and show a full tank when I start it again what might I look to as a culprit? It does register some feel, not completely malfuctioning.
I did check to be sure the fuel filler tube cap was completely shut. 2007 F150 XLT 5.4l.

Wouldn't it have been good if you would have already started it to see if "it would shape up" by itself?
That seems more easy to accomplish than to write a post first.

Has it sorted itself out now? I'm sure after you wrote this you went to restart/drive it.

Did you 'overfill' the tank? Is your tank a 24 gallon tank (I don't recall the tank sizes from back then). I'm trying to as if 19 gallons is the appropriate amount to fill it -is it an 18 gallon tank and it took more than expected or is is 24 gallons and you had a few gallons left and the value seems appropriate.

If/when you head back outdoors -unscrew the gas cap and reinstall. Perhaps it needs to vent. Perhaps it will (or has) self resolved.

Did you have the ignition shut off when you were filling? Another vehicle I owned would not accurately display the fuel level if vehicle was left running during a fillup. It did require a key off/key on cycle to make the electronics work like expected.

Let us know.

Ignition was off, I think it is a 24 gallon tank, I have out in 22 gal plus a few times with no problems. I did remove the gas cap and reinstalled it. It stays the same whether they ingestion is on fort start, go back to left where ignition is off. I do not know how the fuel gauger sensor works, thought maybe be driving may jolt it loose, with luck.

I guess the gas pump actually dispensed the gas the dialed and receipt indicate! The gauge does show a little more than when I pulled into the pump area.

This happened on my 2004 about a year ago and I haven't noticed it since then but I don't drive it a lot either. I think the truck was sitting for about 9 months before I brought it home so I think there may have been some corrosion on the fuel sender contacts and it got stuck. After about 40 miles of driving the level slowly came up and since then it seems to be working correctly.

I tried per some internet advice and the Chilton or Haynes manual to see if resetting the gauge may help. Of course all the advice did not show what my truck showed. Anyway, I tried that procedure and just drove around , After a while the gauge slowly went up and did eventually show a full tank. Now it goes up right away too the current level , and well as drop to empty when switch is turned off.

Other than trying the resetting of the gauge and waiting, I did nothing. Driving around may have loosened up any dirt that may have interfered. It may just have been a fluke.

The reset was accomplished by starting the engine and then pushing in the odometer reset button, towards the top of instrument panel, until the "Cal" showed up in the screen to the lower right panel. I kept it in, turned off then turned on the ignition. I really do not know if that did anything though. Driving around and seeking some rough, bump road ended up with the gauge working.
