I know from reading that the diesel-like ticking is an indicator of bad cam phasers, but what about transmission wise? Any trouble spots to look for there?
I'm debating offering him 12k (if it has no issues after I inspect and drive), and walking away if he doesn't.
Does that sound like a good plan?

If you drive it, like it, and seems mechanically sound, then that sounds like a good game plan to me. There are plenty of good trucks out there, so if this one doesn't work out, you'll find one elsewhere!
