A friend of mine spent 2200 on his truck, plus additional cost. He took the truck to the dealership to get that ticking noise repaired. They had it for a week. Called him and said he had a lifter stuck, and it had to be replaced. They replaced it, cost him a little bit more, can't remember the total after it was all said and done. What is funny is when he took the truck into them, it would spin the back tires at take off. It was running fine. No engine lights. It had a slight tick, hadn't gotten as bad as mine had with 133k on it. He spent all that money to fire it up and hear the same tick. He was pissed. Hes been living with it for now, till I told him about this, and he only got more pissed. He just went and ordered his yesterday. I didn't have the cash for both sides. So I couldn't wait, and just replaced one side. Its clear that the other side is ticking, and the driver side is not. The noise in drive thru's is nice. It doesn't sound near as bad. Replacing passenger side soon.

It does seem to have the same symptoms and the tick is constant through the RPM range (idle-4000)
Mine disappears after 1000 RPM's. Sounds the same to me.

All the money being spent to fix a part that really isn't broken and is simply eliminated by replacing a couple of parts that cost around $200.00 to fix..it's too bad. I just got my 06 F150 Lariat on Friday and the truck has no issues as far as I can tell but I am paranoid that this is gonna come up in mine. I am pretty good at DIY vehicle work (built from ground up Chev 350...dyno'ed 413HP..for my '68 Camaro RS) so I am not too worried about doing it myself. I hope others who have this ticking problem find this information so they can make a better judgement call on spending a lot of $$$. Big thank you to those who have brought this to light and hopefully saved us F-150 owners some money in these tight times.

Sorry for double posting, but with 172k miles on your truck. I am almost certain that your ticking sound is probably the same phaser sound everyone else hears... I've seen these parts that are replaced, and they do not look damaged in anyway... the phasers that is. However I would like to defiantly prove this. My truck is an 04 with 133k miles on it, and its had a diesel tick. It goes away above 1000 RPM's, again I got a lot less miles then yours.

Well, I have had the tick since I bought it and haven't had the phasers replaced because of the high cost. I was the first one on here to change the solenoid to see if it stopped the tick, and it did. I was just as shocked as anyone. I am somewhat confused by your post, what were you saying or trying to point out? The tick (from what I can gather) was the same tick everyone else has been talking about. I was fairly certain that my phasers weren't bad once I had the VCT out and had a chance to look into the motor and see them for myself. For having 170K miles it looks pretty damn clean I'd say.

In one of your post Zipper you stated that your truck did this 0-4000 RPM... I was just saying mine goes away after 1 thousand, which complies with the TSB. However I fixed mine by replacing the parts you mentioned, and it worked... Just confirming my tick sounded more like the gillie guy's tick he posted.

Ohh... Okay. Good deal. Yeah my tick would happen not only at idle (like many others) but would still tick all he way up. It obviously wasnt as noticeable, but sitting in a shop and revving it up to ~3500 with a Snap-on scanner you could still easily hear it.

I called 2 dealers, First one said $133.18.

Second said 133.18. Then he said he will give me a price cut. He said $101 for the vct and $5 for the seal.
