The sticky explains how to replace these, but I'm not about to mess anything up myself and I'm horribly uncomfortable messing up the engine of my only ride.

I need your help peeps! How much on average does it cost to get cam phasers and timing chains replaced? Maybe even lifters too. Thunder is making a nasty tick sound, only when accelerating! It's really obvious on the passenger side, but it's getting really annoying when I'm listening to my loud music and I can still hear it!

Only on acceleration, sure its not exhaust. Not that it isnt in timing set but its usualy at low rpm's. Unless the timing chain guides feel slap apart. And probably about $1,500 from a reputable shop for just the front end stuff, add anothe $400.00 for the front end stuff. Just a ball park.

And as for the exhaust, how could I tell? Remember, I'm not mechanically savy, and it does sound like chains slapping around in there to me.

From what I understand, a bad phaser issue sounds like a diesel. You say it's on passenger side and its a real nasty tick. Is it loudest when engine is cold and fades when warmed up?

I'd be interested in knowing the cost of this repair myself, thinking of putting my bonus money into it just for peace of mind since I'd like to keep my truck for awhile. The local ford dealer quoted me 1200 to 1500 for both phasers.

Couldn't say, it's been hot lately, but it ticks when accelerating hot and cold.

Does it tick when you first start it cold,(not the timing chain slap noise but the tick/knock noise)? In park, when you raise the throttle slightly, does the tick go away or follow with the rpm's?
It may be exhaust manifold?

My dealer did my phasers, both sides $1200. I don't know about lifters.
