Default Are PCM and TCM updates worth it?

Is the updated software for the PCM and TCM worth the money to have a dealer update it, or is it better to do it only if it addresses a specific problem?

I was on another forum type website and this subject came up. From what I read where the ones that did have their PCM's reflashed/updated, the reflash didn't last and they were back to square one eventually. It seemed like they ended up getting a programmer and being done with the issues they were attempting to correct with the reflash/update. But, I did find it interesting that it seemed to happen to a few and not just one person.

True or not, I have no idea nor do I have any experience with mine being "reflashed", I went the programmer route from the get go.
