Recently acquired 2005 Ford F150 5.4 3v with 210k miles extended cab. Bought it very reasonable, I heard the chain slapping on driver side, I bought it cheap enough for my son's friend who needed wheels.
We tackled the timing job, found driver side guide completely gone, stuck in oil pick up tube, the engine would shake pretty bad sometimes guessing due to oil starvation. Anyhow, bought new timing set all Motorcraft, cam phasers, VCT solenoids, sprocket, etc, Melling 340HV, iron tensioners. Truck was extremely dirty with oil everywhere, working in this Houston, Texas heat and humidity wasn't fun. We put it all back together and codes P0340 and P0344 pop, I didn't have these codes prior to the tearing her down. I knew wiring was okay, I swapped camshaft position sensors, checked out, disconnected alternator wiring, all good. Previous oil pump was working fine, led me to believe it was the phaser or VCT solenoid. I did NOT want to take the front cover off again, so I removed passenger side valve cover and used cheese wedge and found that the cam phaser was not seated correctly. The middle finger or tine that supposed to point the "L" was off center, not by alot but very noticeable. When torqueing the cam phaser bolt an additional 90 degrees after 30lb torque, it shifted the center of the phaser like the phaser acting like it wanted to come apart. Mind you, this is a new Motorcraft phaser, almost $300 I paid a dealer. Well, I should have warrantied that part but I decided to use a Dorman phaser that I could source fast and locally. $200 later from Advance Auto, I install the new phaser and before I installed the new bolt, I lubed the underside of the bolt and face of the phaser, per instructions and again, I torqued it down and again it moved the center of the phase off base. Luckily, I had extra bolts from prior jobs and re-installed the phaser again trying to prevent the center of the phaser from shifting too much, it worked, I also replaced the VCT solenoid with the old motorcraft solenoid that I knew was good just as insurance. So far so good, VCT system enables now, no codes!
