Hey y’all, so I’m having a bit of a hiccup here and need some advice. I had the code P0022 for camshaft timing over advanced on bank 2, I replaced the vct solenoid on that bank and the code went away. 3 days later it pops back up but this time it states that the camshaft timing is over retarded. One thing to note is I put in an ngk vct solenoid not OEM.
Im trying to figure out what the problem is, I’ve had several mechanics tell me I need an engine swap or all new timing components. My truck is currently at 171k miles and I cannot afford those types of repairs at the moment. Im having a hard time believing my timing components are the issue because the truck operate just fine, very slight tick from underneath drivers side but no other serious noises such as knocking or clunking. it’s only the code that’s giving me a problem. No drivability issues, I do have a timing cover leak that’s very minor and I just top it off while monitoring.
any input would be greatly appreciated guys! I’m in a desperate situation since I need this truck to last till I can buy a more practical car for city use, this is all I have right now. 04 5.4 3V.
They’re not wrong necessarily. The sensor in question and the computer can pick up things you can’t.
That tick <could> be a sloppy timing chain skipping up against that timing cover. Not an unusual symptom.
i appreciate the feedback. Do you by any chance know what the cheapest first options are to solve this code? I would ideally like to start off with the minor things then work my way up. Thanks

Personally I think the cheapest and easiest thing to try is change the oil to 5w30 minimum synthetic or if you are already running that go to 5w40, and of course a quality oil filter.
This should boost your hot oil pressure and in theory just may be enough to resolve your issue.

thanks a lot man, really appreciate the advice. I’m currently running 5w20. I heard these motors are supposed to run 5w30 but 5w20 was used for CAFE standards. Will definitely try it out.
