My truck is perfect...but then again, it only has 63K and is a vacation vehicle/garage queen. It's an '04 with the 5.4
A few days ago, I was walking across a parking lot when I heard a vehicle start up and make a weird diesel noise. It was a Lincoln Navigator, looked to be an '05-'07. Every one of those vehicles comes with a 5.4.
My God, what a racket! It sounds diesel alright, but at a higher pitch. I'll tell ya, if my truck ever started to sound anything like that, I'd get it fixed immediately. I've heard that it costs around two grand to replace the front end of the engine. I'd probably try replacing those doohickies in the valve covers and changing the oil...if that didn't work, I wouldn't screw around...I'd have the whole front end rebuilt.
Yeah, that sucks...but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than a new truck.

sorry to jack the thread but...I know if you don't get a pic of that odometer at 300k and start a new thread about it a lot of forum members including myself are going to feel left out.

Haha will do! I panicked for a moment driving yesterday because I thought it may have rolled 300k without me getting a picture lol. I'm gonna do a thread with pics the day it hits which will be this week

From what I have seen, it's sort of a who picks which truck with these engines. Like a previous poster said, luck of the draw. Just got mine recently and already have that dreaded timing tick. I won't say it's a bad engine. There has definetely been better, but I think it's all a matter of regular maintenance, full cleanings, etc.

Mine is an 07 that has a little over 150K on it. About 10K miles ago it started a light tick that was almost inaudible. It's now more noticeable so over summer I'll be replacing the phasers. Only other issue I've had with the engine was the spark plugs which isn't really the engine's fault. Previous owner changed all but one plug (passenger side rear plug) which started my issues and of course that's the one that broke when removing them. Other than that 0 problems from my 5.4 other than feeling underpowered occasionally.
