Default Oil Leak

I have a 2002 F150 4.2 and it's had a leak in my garage for a while. I checked it out and it's leaking from the transmission plug under the truck. Any sugestions on how to fix this leak? Thanks

You sure it's the automatic transmission and not the engine oil pan plug? What color is the fluid on the floor? I did'nt think the 2004 to 2008's had a drain plug in the automatic transmission pan (you did mention this is a 2002, so you posted on the wrong forum). I always saw the pan being removed in a corner by loosening all the pan bolts and prying a corner down to allow the fluid to drain this way. Maybe because it's assumed the transmission filter is to be replaced, and the pan needs to be removed to do this.

If indeed you're refering to the transmission and it does have a drain plug (wish I cold go out and look at mine; I'm out of town), then buy 5 quarts of transmission fluid, remove the plug (you'll be draining the automatic transmission pan) and install a new brass washer. Re-install the drain bolt, and fill it up, getting the automatic transmission fluid to temp, and check the level with the transmission in neutral (E-brake on). Don't overfill. If the automatic transmission filter has not been replaced in the past 25 to 30K, then remove the pan and replace that too along with a new pan gasket. Most shops will do this all for around $60.00 to $75.00.

Thanks for the info. It's a dark color and I beleive it's the trasmission since it's further away towards the back of the truck from the motor drain bolt. It's a round rubber plug. Sorry I did post this on the wrong section. I will purchase the parts and replace the filter since I've never replaced it before.

I don't think that round rubber plug is the transmission drain plug. It sounds to me like the oil you're describing is engine oil. You may possibly have a rear main seal leak, and the oil is traking it's way down and dripping towards the rear.

That is the dust plug on your bell housing. Is the fluid red or brown? Brown is engine oil, more than likely leaking out of your rear main seal. Red is transmission fluid, either from your torque converter seal or leaking from around your pump on the transmission.
