Default Oil change

I just bought a 2006 XLT with 65000 miles and wanted to switch to synthetic oil the next time I change. Is it alright to just switch? Do I have to add a additive before I change? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I've heard you don't need anything and also heard that you need to add some additive prior to changing the Dino to break up the sludge? Any thoughts? Thanks-
