Oil 'change'
So after being a Castrol fanboy for the past 10 years or so, I decided to do an oil change today on the f150 I picked up a couple months ago. I was considering going with Castrol again, but after hearing all positive and zero negative comments on this oil, I picked up 7 liters of 5w20 synthentic Mobil 1. $42(5L) + $10(1L) + $10(1L) + $8 for the Motorcraft 820s filter+$11 for a new drain plug(I had a feeling) + $7 for filter cap wrench - $7 for cap wrench = $81 oil change done myself...what is this world coming to! I know, I could have went a cheaper route but I believe the extra few dollars are worth it.
You are now saying to yourself, "I don't get the whole cap wrench thing". So, I bought the one that supposedly fit my filter, turns out it doesn't and I will be returning this shortly to Wal-Mart. I was able to turn the filter by hand with a few mild grunts to aid me. I was going to get a K&N filter because they have the nut on the end but the parts store didn't have one in stock and I heard Motorcraft ones are pretty decent. The drain plug came loose after a good reef on it but when I got it out I noticed a couple threads looked damaged.....I tried putting it back in when I was done draining but it didn't go all the way by hand, so I cracked open the brand new one and went on super smooth!(saved!) The rubber seal is built into the plug if you are wondering. Took about 6.3-6.4 liters when all was said and done.(Requires 6.6L according to manual but 0.2-0.3L still in system I guess) Anyways I'm happy now and so is my truck and that's my story for today.

Wow... I can get a shop to do my oil change/lube job + a full inspection, for what it cost you to buy your oil... 54$ for me (after tax) for all that, mind you I don't use synthetic which is saving me a lot of money, but I've never really bought into the hype of using synthetic. Sweet story though
Don't worry, it should be cheaper next time you buy just the oil and filter. I use the K&N filter specifically for the nut, my cost for an oil change is around 80, but I use 7qts of 5w-20 Royal Purple also.
I assume Whistler is somewhere in Canada. Do you have Wal-Marts up there? I know the price is going to be higher in Canada (it's all that "FREE" stuff the Gov't. gives ya, right?) but we pay $3.67 for a Motorcraft 820S down here at WM. And I personally wouldn't worry about Mobil1, we can buy a 5 qt. jug of Motorcraft 5W-20 Semi-synthetic (very good oil) for $12. Buy 2 at a time and it ends up costing you $20.47 plus tax for the change. I realize it would be more in Canada, but not near what you paid IF you have WM anywhere around you.
Wow! My local Ford dealership runs semi-synthetic oil changes for $32.00 about every 6 months! The shop down the street from me runs full synthetic changes for $49.00!
Why did you need to change the oil fill cap and drain plug? I usually place a copper washer between the drain plug and oil pan every other oil change. Never had to replace the plug itself.

I hear guys talking about using the K&N filter because of the nut on the filter! How tight are you guys putting your filters back on? I never have a problem taking my filter off when changing the oil! Just snug it up and never use a wrench to tighten the filter! Or are there other benefits to using the K&N filter over the motorcraft?

I just go to the dealer to get my oil changed. it's about 36 bux and they check the tire (presure and tread depth) fill the washer fluid. I rarely have to add that between changes (I have a long commute) brake fluid, PS fluid etc. I don't have to get a filter, oil, dirty, dispose of anything. I totally fail to understand changing your own oil. I guess working 60+ hours a week I do not like to spend time under the hood. Oh and my AWESOME wife takes the truck to get the oil changed.

Walmart, though cheap, is the demise of Main Street America. Not having one is often seen as a good thing. Hopefully Whistler doesn't, as that would be horrible for the commerce of the village of Whistler.
I use the dealer too. They have been running specials on semi synthetic for around $20 ! Plus its on record if the motor fails~!(If you don't have records you might have a problem with your warranty)
