Default Off-set on rims

Don't wanna sound like a idiot but will someone please explain offset on rims to me. I have tried to do some research but I still don't get it.

well it's the opposite of back spacing. the center of the rim is 0mm off set. when you go into - off set the part of the rim where it bolts up is pulled closer to the inside of the rim. + off set the part where it bolts up is further away. a wheel with a "deep dish" has a high number negative off set causing the wheel to stick out. the 20 inch wheels on my truck are too close to the control arm and frame for the tires im running. they have a +44 off set. So when i get new wheels im looking for a wheel with an off set of about +18mm. This difference will pull the wheels further away from the truck. Lifter truck's usually have a wide stance because they run negative off set wheels, like -12mm off-set
