Question ODB 2 reader wont read

I borrowed a odb 2 reader from a friend and hooked it up to my ford (2007 f 150) I have used it on other veichles with no problems. When i select link to read the computer i get and "err" i tried for an half hour, reset the machine new batteries, still nothing. I was reading on the forums about a blown fuse, and the odb wont work. I cant find the fuse for the odb reader, its not listed in my manual at all. I have a lariat model not sure if that matters. Now i have no lights on the dash on no errors on the truck, but last week my truck sputtered a bit while accelerating and the engine light flashed a few times then shut off and has not done it since. FIgured it was a misfire, probably have a cop going. But if thats no lights on the dash would the odb reader still connect to the truck. THX
Please help me.

well i checked fuse 3 and the cigar lighter works. And still nothing. The odb reader is really old plus no errors on truck either, not sure if this makes a difference.

At the risk of sounding silly, it can't read any codes if their arn't any. More than likely, the reader stays blank unless it detects a code. Call or email the manufacturer of the unit. Google the company that made it and verify with them.

well i talked to the owner of the odb reader this is the newest vehicle that it has been used on. He said even if there is no errors on the vehicles he has used it on it still connects. Gonna get a brand new model and see what happens i guess
