Default Noise when backing up

I have a noise sometimes when backing up. Its like a screech. I was told its the gears. And that it sometimes does that. And is normal. Since the gears arent normally made to back up.

If it's only when you back up, and it's only in the rear, it's prolly your parking brake. Mine did that for a very short time until it came time to replace the rear brakes. I put new rotors and pads on it, and while I had it apart, I cleaned the parking brakes and lubed them up and never had another squeak. The parking brakes are basically a drum brake system built into the rear rotor and they can get pretty nasty in there collecting road grime and mud. It seems they seldom get properly maintained because rear brakes tend to take a back seat to the front since they last so much longer than the front.

Rear brake is disc, and parking brake is a drum style inside the hub of the rotor

Exactly...It's just a basic drum brake system built into the rotor of the rear disc brake system. The primary rear brakes are disc just like the front, but the parking brake is inside the rotor. It gets full of rust and grime because there is a dust shield on the back and it tends to hold crap in the drum, especially if you ever get it in the mud. It's hard to get any water in it to flush it out because of how it's designed.

Have you looked? I thought my rear end was going out.

Brake dust build up on one wheel?

On the days it is happening if you can jack up the rear of the truck and spin the rear axle.

Should help you isolate the noise.

Is it a solid screech or does it kind of go with a rotation? Possibly a u joint?? I had a bad one -only made noise in reverse.tough to explain the noise. Put the parking brake on partway when it does it and see if it changes.

Sounds to me like your rear pads are shot and you're eating the rear rotor to pieces... Once the pad is gone, it's metal on metal...that'll make a helluva racket.
