noise from underneath.
I have a 2005 f150, V8, smaller of the 2. On the way to work I could hear a rattle . One hr drive time. Once I hit slower traffic and window down I heard a light rattle. Thought it was car behind me. Pulling into lot w/no traffic around I realized it was me. Thought maybe fan bearing.
Leaving work I heard nothing. Closer to home , still nothing.
Once I got home and in driveway nothing, so I did drive/ reverse and it was there. A rattling noise from under neath. Only when in drive or reverse. Not steady, just come and go. But evry time for a short spell. Almost like something is in the flywheel.
Can't check it as has to be in gear. So when wife gets home I have her do drive reverse as I am under truck. Sounds to be coming from transfer case/
It has a leak and figured low, wasn;t low. Changed fluid anyways. Drove it around block a few times, hoping, but still an issue.
The only thing I could figure was on Tuesday this week I had it inspected and maybe a shield got bumped. Nothing looked out of whack to me. Passed inspection.
2 wheel and 4 wheel drive does same thing.
When I bought truck had 82k, now 93k miles. Paid cash and was hoping for a non issue vehicle for a few tears.
When under truck sounds like transfer case area.
Any ideas as I told wife " lets pay cash" and have a good vehicle w/no notes. Only had it about 6 months now.

Hard to understand the description of just a rattle.
Inclination would be something associated with the exhaust/manifold since that’s all in the same area and with these exhaust systems being mixed metal parts (steel, aluminum), that’s where a lot of noise can originate from.
I have an 08 with almost 300K on it and there’s a number of different noises. Just have to make the determination whether or not they will drive you crazy
I will try and get an audio.
On further thinking today w/o the frustration...when I am in driveway it only does it in drive and reverse. Never in nuetral or park. And it does it like 1/2 circle.
Best way to explain- when I was a kid in late 70s we put baseball cards on forks and when it hit spokes it made the sound we were looking for. this is like same noise but with bent rim , Only hitting 1/2 the spokes on 180 degree side, not touching other 1/2.
So what is moving when in drive or reverse at a complete stop? Can't hear when driving as exhaust and outside noises dissapate hearing.
Maybe torque converter?
