Default Noise in Drive Train

I have a recently purchased 2005 F 150 ... odometer reads 108k.... also looks as if it was used to tow something...

It has a slap (clunk) in the drive train when I accelerate from a stop. I put it on jack stands, held the drive shaft, moved the rear tires and I still hear the clunk... axles???

It also makes an odd noise when it downshifts uphill at hiway speed.... it kinda sounds like running over the 'wake up' notches on the side of the road.... but it only lasts for about 1/2 second.

Any opinions welcomed. Thanks.

Rear end gears I would think.... pull the rear cover and take a look.

Mine was shifting rough up and down. There is a tranny computer update that fixes this and worked well for me. Kinda pricy and you have to go to a dealership to have it done. Also, are you sure it's not your U-joints?

I'm going to change U-joints this weekend.... it's a long bed, so it has two drive shafts... 3 u-joints and a carrier bearing.
Anyone know if the carrier bearing needs to be changed while replacing U-joints?
