Default Newbie Question for the Experts

Good Evening Everyone,

This is my first post and I am hoping to find someone who has had a similar experience (not really though...)

Coming home from a friend's house the other night driving down the same road I always take when the entire truck (F150 5.4L Triton V-8) started to shake so bad that my wife had to grab the bottles of water that were literally "flying" out of the cup-holders. Have never experienced anything like this in any car or truck that I've ever owned. Very similar feeling to driving over washboard bumps.

The road was newly paved so I can easily rule that out, but I am at a loss for a real explanation or suggestion as to what happened.

It was defnintely a cyclical feeling; the faster I went the faster it happened and vice versa. Checked all the tires for foreign objects or bubbles and saw nothing. No unusual smells. No leakage. Nothing. Next day it was fine.

I am at a loss... drivetrain? transmission? axle? ...?????

I know this is akin to trying to explain a noise to a mechanic, but I was just wondering if anyone out there has ever experienced anything like this.

Thanx for your time, comments, or suggestions.

What engine does your truck have and how many miles. This has hapened to me a few times and I believe it is caused by a misfire in the engine.

No clue, but if it ever happens again try slipping it into neutral before you slow down. If that stops the shake then it's likely an engine issue, if not, then it's drivetrain.

Sounds like a really bad misfire to me, check the plugs injectors and cops (coil over plugs) was it on 4th gear passing acceleration?

Most of the time the check engine light will blink during a miss fire but not always. This is someting to look for next time it happens

Default Thank You

Hey I gotta Thank You all for your replies.

I didn't notice the check engine light on while this was happening but maybe I just wasn't looking.
Next time it happens (better not) I will try to pop it in neutral.

I did check the plugs and one of them was just nasty dirty...

After a new set everything seems to be fine, so I am hoping it was just a bad misfire.

Thanx again !!!

Jim
