Love these ancient threads. Would love to hear the outcomes. but "I can't get no, satisfaction".

I have something that developed about a year ago, with similar repair shop comments. A few weeks ago, I rode in a 2007, identical engine (Explorer, I think) and year to mine. Same exact noise on the same side (right). I asked him how long he's had that and he showed me the diagnostic from 2012. They recommended 8x COPS. He replaced only the single COP on a misfiring cylinder and ignored the noise ever since. No problems other than the noise and he's now at about 170k miles (maybe 110k at the diagnosis).

My take is that unless it's something obvious (like exhaust or COP CEL), and doesn't affect performance, it may be best to ignore it. Personally, I'm embarrassed when folks think I'm diesel, but I'm open to other suggestions, so feel free.

Has anyone with a 2017 observed this issue yet? Wonder if the new glass panes make a difference.

Default Glass panes ????

Oil pressure is behind a lot of these problems . Install a separate gauge , it won't fix it but you may decide it's too freaky and do something before it damages cams . Dash gauge is an idiot gauge it reads mid line if pressure 7 psi.
Use mc filters with the good anti drain back valve and syn oil .Tensioners no longer hold chain until oil pressure comes up, new ones don't ratchet . . Poor oil pump, bad seals on chain tensioners , broken plastic guides plugging oil pickup screen . Combustion dirt in oil blocking screens in VCTS and other places . Don't use extended oil change intervals .
If you think its bad enough drop oil pan and look for plastic , if so you are in for timing job . Use old style metal ratcheting tensioners they don't need seals either . .
Many of these noises from engine are telling you it's not getting enough oil or its worn from just that .
