I'm not real familiar with the 4.2L but a programer/tuner would help. Throttle body spacers and cold air intakes help to.

Or two more cylinders.

For any real gains, you really are looking at forced induction or a swap. I don't think they even make headers for the 4.2L in our body style.

Definitely pass on the throttle body spacer. Your best seat of the pants per dollar will be a tuner. You can home make an intake for a few bucks if you really want to.

GATORB8 is correct. The 4.2 is Fords gas "miser" for it's 04 to 08 lineup. I have the 4.2 in my 2005 STX. Really like the engine for several reasons, all of which the folks here that frequent this web site have heard; decent mileage, and a whole lot less hassle pertaining to tuneups and the like, plus good performance, as I can cruise along at highway speeds just as good as the V8's, just takes me a few seconds more to get there! I do pass the gas stations morre often than the 5.4; for me that's a plus, as I don't need the power; I don't tow large loads.

I have added a K&N semi cold air intake, a free flowing Walker turbo muffler, and a SUPERCHIPS tune.

Don't expect any significant "seat of the pants" results. My truck does run better in the way of some slight increases in MPG (I gained 1 honest MPG), and the truck runs very smooth. There is perhaps a bit of performance gain, but nothing like what the V8's will experience with the same mods.

My next add will be the electric fan. I have a 2 speed Mark VIII fan already, and am waiting on my Delta Current Converter to arrive (ships this weekend). Again, I don't expect any real big gains in power, but I'm after mileage. I expect engine drag from the clutch type fan to be eliminated, and perhaps I'll gain another MPG or so. I'll post the results after this install.

Anything that can go on a V8 can benefit a V6, but don't expect the same significant gains in power.
If you wanted power, you picked the wrong engine. If you want reliability, good gas mileage, and easy maintenance, you'll get it with the 4.2

like stated look into a tuner to start!! then you could do intake, efans, underdrive pulleys, exhaust, maybe ignition upgrades theese will all get you afew ponies but like also stated nothing like the big boys (5.4-4.6) will get from the mods!! your best bet would be forced induction or a bigger motor!!

To the original poster...don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of the 4.2 V6. I enjoy it's simplicity, and ease of maintenance. I'm on my second Ford truck with this engine. I put over 230K on the last one, and ran great when I traded it in on my current ride. I plan to put the same mileage on this truck, then I'll consider that 6.1 V8 that Ford plans to sell this year.

Hmmm, perhaps I see a used 2011 Raptor in my driveway sometime in 2015.....

I think it's a 6.2L for the new motor.
