Default Need some help!

I have a 2004 f150 lariat 4x4 5.4l.. I have been having issues with the 4x4. On several instances I've put it in 4Hi when Rollin slow as it goes into 4wd. But if I put it in reverse is doesn't spin the front wheels and it makes a horrid grinding noise. Here's another thing though. Now when I put it In 4wd If pops up on the dash "transmission malfunction" I'm stumped any help would be appreciated.
