Default Need some advise on purchasing a used f150!

Hi ALL,

I'm new to this forum but I've been on here a lot reading much about these ford f150s as I'm looking to buy a used one. Thought I'd start a thread and see if anyone can give me some advise as I'm sure this forum has a good share of people that know what a f150 is worth.

I'm close to closing on this deal for a 2007 Ford F150 FX4. It has 101,000 miles and i've offered $10,000. They are willing to accept it. Kbb has the vehicle at a "Good" TRADE-IN (not private) value of $8600-$11200. if it wasn't for the rust i would say the truck is in "very good condition" which brings it to $12,000 trade in value. Have not found any trucks within "trade in" values so this is by far the best deal i've found for similar type vehicles.

As you can see in the pics though there is wide-spread surface rust on the frame. i poked around and nothing fell off (very few rust dust if anything). Also there is NO RUST on the body. Friend of mine say it can be resurfaced and make it look new again as long as its not chipping or breaking away. Need a bit a more advice here from knowledgeable people. All thoughts are welcomed!

Dam, I can't even get my head around that. I used to live in the rust belt, never again. Glad I live out west...

This may not helpful, but I would be inclined to pass on this one, and find a similar one in the south or southwest. For the extra cost of a one-way plane ticket, you would be glad you spent the extra couple hundred $ to avoid that amount of frame rust.

Get yourself a spray bottle and a jug of diesel...start spraying the whole thing down every few weeks depending on weather. Rust will stop.

i did a quick search on auto trader and couldn't find nothing similar selling in the south or southwest for under $13K (too much time to check on craigslist). I few for $11K+ but over 500 miles away and areas where it snows a lot (i.e. OH, IL). I mean i could wait for another good deal but truck searching is exhausting!

Dannofx4, my friend told me something similar. Says it shouldn't be a deal breaker. so you think its worth the purchase?

Thanks to the Internet and Uship, there is no need to deal with rust.

2.5 years ago I got my 2004 from Tenn. Shipped to NY for $700, with basically zero rust, even the aluminium on the engine looked like new.

Here is my original post after I got the truck

The unseen rust is worse then the rust you can see.

Tap the rockers and check the step bars if it has them.

If you buy it get some POR and treat the frame. Then get some black spray paint and paint it up.
I'm just outside of Philly and in my area the put the brine solution down every chance they can even if flurries are forecasted. The try to use it up before warm weather.

I bought my 08 f150 5.4 - 93,000, 4x4 xlt here in AZ for under 11K (5 months ago). Super clean truck with zero rust of course.
With the truck you posted id be more worried about any future maintenance under the truck with rusted bolts etc then possible strength issues from rust. We all know used vehicles always have mechanical issues! That alone would make me only by a rust free truck from the southwest.
Id keep looking for a rust free truck in another state. It will be worth it!

I would avoid if I could. Visible rust is usually the tip of the iceberg of actual rust. In my experience it is a never ending battle that will make you hate the truck.

THIS! Rust is the worst (I enjoy working on things, just not rusty things)! Buying something rust is like shooting yourself in the foot.
