Need Help, Weird Grinding then a Bang!
Hey guys, need some help here. I will be going down the road at random speeds then all of a sudden a grinding sound will start which at first I thought was a wheel bearing (truck has 92,000 miles) but then as I start slowing down and almost come to a stop it makes a bang noise and then stops and starts riding fine again. It is a 2006 XLT 4wd and after talking to a local mechanic he said he thinks its something to do with a vacuum line going to the hub for the 4wd. I thought he was full of crap and went to a buddy's shop and pulled both front wheels of and the bearing and brakes are fine. We also checked the axle and most of the visible chassis parts. But now that I think about it, it does sound as if my truck is trying to engage 4wd and wont catch and once I slow down it catches. Has anyone had a similar problem. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
AK

sounds like the same problem I have
I can't help you but I'm having the same issue. I am getting a loud chatter and then a clunk like a set of gears slamming into gear. The ford dealer has gone through the 4 wd sys and now at a loss. If someone can help you they can me as well.

I had a simular experiance with my 99. It has disc brakes in the rear and the brake shoes in back of the rotor for the emergency brake the clip that hold the shoes rotted and every now and then The shoe would fetch up

Problem fixed!!! It was an IWE solenoid that is located at the right rear of the engine compartment. It's a vacuum operated solenoid that controls actuators for your 4wd. I checked all the lines that run to the hubs and they were fine, so I went to the Ford dealership and picked a new one up (better design) for about $30. It seems they had a problem with the solenoid getting wet so the new design has a cover over it. Hope this helps!
