Default Need help with random over heating.

I have an 07 FX4 with a 5.4.
Last week while driving through town around 45mph a warning came on saying chech gauges. I noticed I was over heating. I pulled over an check the coolant it was low and I had some running out of the overflow. I gave it a few minutes and started it and I was back to normal so I limped it on to work. After work I drove to AutoZone and about the time I pulled into the parking lot it started overheating again. I topped of the coolant and no more problem even after a 240 mile tell today. On my way home from work it over heated again I pulled over killed it waited maybe a min and resarted the truck. I made about 1/4 of a mile and it started over heating again and I killed waited 2-3 min restarted and it was back to normal. I let it run for a few minutes before I started driving again and I made another mile before thr temperature started rising again. I found an empty parking lot and pulled over. I removed to cap on the fill resievor it had a vacuum on it. I was only park for 2-3 minutes. After removing the cap (and putting it back on) I was able to make it the rest of the way home with no trouble (about 3 miles)
Thanks for the help.

Perhaps a dumb response but is your fan working? Or perhaps a stuck tstat unless you've been losing coolant not sure what else it could be

Yes the fan is working. I thought thermostat as well. I was just confused why I could kill it and restart and it would be back to normal even if its for a short time (seems to last longer if i remove the cap for a few sec). I also noticed it was blowing cold air when the heater was on.

I just put a little coolant back in it and drove it around for awhile with no problems

Will the heater only blow cold air? No heat... If so you could have a blockage in the heater core. May just need a system flush or back flush. And can't hurt to check/replace the tstat they are cheap enough

^ this. Cold blowing air is pointing towards a tstat. Like said above, cheap and easy to start there.
