I get 15 combined in my stock '06 5.4 Screw 4x4. I also think that where you live may have something to do with it. I live in Western NC and I get the best mileage in the spring and fall. I have no scientific evidence but I fill up every time and check mileage. It seems like moderate temps are better for my mileage.
I have been experimenting with mileage over the last few months and so far I've experienced good results. First off my truck is bone stock with the exception of the edge tuner and K&N drop in filter, stock size tires, no lift/ level. Truck has 75k on it with fresh plugs and fuel filter. My tuner setting is on level 1 (trans tune only, no engine tweaks) only optional changes are bumped up shift pressure a tad and I lowered the speed at which the TC locks up. My truck will lock up at about 38 mph now which helps mileage when cruising at that speed. I've also changed my driving style (probably the biggest factor in controlling mpg's) I stopped trying to get everywhere before everyone else, I accelerate slower but not too slow, I stick to the speed limits, i coast ad much as possible no need to race to the next stoplight or stop sign and the biggest difference came when I dropped my highway speed from 70 to 60. I've gone from averaging 14-15 mpg's (40% city-60% highway) to 16.5 to 17.5 since making those changes. Of coarse now that the cold weather is setting in and I will soon be using the 4x4 those numbers will drop but I'm pleased to see such a solid gain from my experiment. With a 38 mile round trip to work every day that 1.5-2.5 mpg gain has saved me a bit of money. I nice side affect from slowing my speeds down and not trying to be in front of everyone on the road is that my commutes have become so much more relaxing.
