There are many variables to why this could be. Tank size, drive train, (you didn't specify if your buddy had a 4x4 or not), tires, towing, amount of crap hauled around in the bed, gear ratio, service records, type of driving, terrain driven over, highway miles to city miles ratio...it goes on.

instead of going by miles per tank, hand calculate the fuel mileage on both trucks over the next three fill ups. I bet they are not that far apart. I suspect your friend has the larger 30 some gallon tank.

i get about 325 miles per tank out of my 05 extended cab 4x4 5.4. i fill it up before the low fuel light comes on. i usually average about 15 mpg. i do half highway half city and hardly ever let it get above 3000 rpm. if i hot rod it, which i used to do, i get 12 mpg

add a tonneau cover, a programmer, and light foot it and you can improve your mpgs a bit. I dunno, thats just me though.
