Default Knocking sound

For the last month I have been have a knocking sound coming from somewhere behind my radio or shifter lever. I have no clue what is it, but its starting to get annoying. It sounds like someone knocking on a door.
Anyone have this problem?or know what it could be?
Thanks

I have an 05 and sometimes the lash adjuster knocks lightly, but it quits once I drive it a bit. How many miles on engine? Any probs up to this point?

Does it do it driving down the road or just at idle? If its lash adjuster you wont hear it if the radio is on. Naother possibility is the starter not disengaging from the flywheel all the way. in this case it would get louder and faster driving than idling.

Could it possibly be the A/C, heat blend door? The one on the wife's Explorer rear air will drive you nuts.

I thought it was something to do with the heater, but it makes the sound even if the heater is off. It makes the sound at idle and while driving, the sound doesn't get louder.

check the starter, make sure it isn't touching the flywheel all the time. I had one once that the starter slipped(bolt broke) and made a nasty racket.
