issue with spake plugs
Is there a simple answer to why there is a problem with the plugs on the 5.4 motor ?
Or is this a complexed issue.
I have a 2007 with the 4.6.
I just had the plugs changed. But the guys said ford has a problem with there plugs.
is there a simple anwer to this. Or is this a big can of worms for me to ask.....

Not a big can at all. Ford doesn't manufacture spark plugs but they do design them. The issue is that when removing them the upper body sometimes separates and the porcelain breaks. However the way they are designed there is still a metal casing, and the porcelain with the electrode remaining in the threads in the head. So they make a kit. There is a rod that bonds to the electrode to pull it out. Then a tool to unthread the metal casing. Not really as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be. About a half hour process per plug but the chances of all of them breaking is slim. As long As you follow the procedures set out by ford to remove them you should be fine.
Also they don't need to be changed for a 100k miles so it's not like its an issue that often.
So bottom line is the engine was designed to use this certain plug, the manufacture struggles with durability. But ford is not going to change aN engine design because plugs "could" break when being removed.

Take a look at the sticky on spark plugs at the top of this section. GATORB8 did a great job on that post. The initial couple of pages identify the problem, the engines effected, and the years involved. From there it describes (with many posts), how to best replace the plugs if your truck falls into the catagory.
