Default iPod/iPhone AUX input... Need help! Can't get it to work...

I thumbed up and ordered the cheapest AUX input I could get on ebay... Its the Apogee iPod Auxiliary Input (MC-8088A) and I plugged the booger in and its a no go... There is a black and red lead wire but the directions mention nothing about them... As directed to install, I plugged the device in, the ipod turned on and hooked to the device (tried both thru the 8pin and the 3.5 option) and hit the aux button and still says no aux found...

My FX4 unit has 2 connections on the back... the big supply and a smaller one that I had to unplug to use this device... The cd player works even with the smaller plug unplugged...

Thinking I got a bad device or am I missing something??
