Default Interesting Front end 4x4 problem

The truck is a 2004 fx4. The problem is or question is, has to deal with the front locking hubs. While under power the front end is turning with the wheels, both sides, but the truck is in 2wd. From my understanding while in 2wd the front wheels should be free spinning from the half shafts and diff... ??

I have tried searching for info on this problem but all i can find has to deal with one wheel hub trying to engage cause a grinding noise. I have no grinding noise, just smooth wheel rotations. Also what would cause both front hubs to engage smoothly as if the truck was purposely put in to 4x4 hi but physically is only in 2wd mode ..?

Anyone have a suggestion of the cause or fix for the problem...

thanks

Is it switch on the fly? Maybe the switch has gone out in the engaged mode.

Another idea, I had an 05 with switch on the fly, and manual lock hubs. I was told by my dealer that if I turned the hub lock from automatic, to lock that it would bypass the switch on fly and force the 4x4 to engage. This was an alternate way of engaging 4x4 if the switch went out. So you might look at the hubs to be sure they are in automatic mode if you have that option.

I do have the on the fly switch but the T-case isn't engaging and sending power to the front which i think would happen if the switch malfunctioned to the on position.
